Today we are pleased to announce the arrival of limited edition bottles of Nikka Whisky “Single Malt Yoichi Nonpeated” and “Single Malt Miyagikyo Peated”.
First product in the “NIKKA DISCOVERY Series”
This is the first release in the “NIKKA DISCOVERY Series” in preparation for Nikka Whiskey’s 90th anniversary in 2024.
Previous limited editions of Yoichi and Miyagikyo have had different personalities with “different barrel types used in the wood finish” such as the 2017 Moskal Wood Finish, 2018 Manzanilla Wood Finish, and 2020 Apple Brandy Wood Finish.
This time, the whisky will not be finished, but will be made with “different raw materials” to bring out the hidden and unexpected character of Single Malt Yoichi and Single Malt Miyagikyo, while taking advantage of their charms. 2nd release in 2022 and 3rd release in 2023 are planned.
1,Single Malt Yoichi Nonpeated
Feature
The richness and presence of Yoichi malt is still present in the fruity aroma.
It is somewhat strange that it is Yoichi but non-piped. Putting aside the preconceived notion that it is, the fruity aroma is also followed by a sweet and savory aroma like buttered toast.
Even though the taste is non-piped, it is still a powerful assertion of the malt from the direct coal-fired distillation, as one would expect from Yoichi, but the overall taste is slightly sweet and gradually turns into a bitter aftertaste. It is the sweetness that brings the whole thing together nicely, and it is different from the Yoichi we have had so far.
Tasting Notes
Flavor | Gorgeous and fruity. Slight milky, honey sweetness, and savory aroma of coconut. |
Taste | Sweet and sour with hints of berries, pears, and apples, and a solid malt richness. Gentle and soft sweetness envelopes the whole. |
Aftertaste | Smooth, caramelized, full-bodied finish with a hint of bitter that lingers gently. |

2,Single Malt Miyagikyo Peated
Feature
Combination of the gorgeousness and peat of Miyagikyo malt
This whisky is made with only peated malt, instead of the originally floral and fruity Miyagikyo malt. While utilizing the character of Miyagikyo, the addition of peat gives this whisky a well-balanced taste with the rich, light sweetness of Miyagikyo malt and a strong peat flavor.
When just poured, the aroma is somewhat hidden by the peat, and it is easy to detect the sweetness of the oak and vanilla, but as time goes by, the pleasant peat comes to the forefront. The taste is a mix of dark berry sweet and sour, vanilla sweetness, and rich cocoa chocolate sweetness with the peat as the core, but the peat asserts itself again at the end.It is a whisky that tastes as if the Miyagikyo malt is tightly wrapped around a pillar of peat.
Tasting Notes
Flavor | Intense sweetness reminiscent of honey and ripe fruit, woodiness from the oak, vanilla and cinnamon in harmony with the peat aroma. |
Taste | Raisin, dried cherry sweetness, light but firm peat |
Aftertaste | A rich bitter chocolate aftertaste with a long, crisp peaty finish. |
