Today we are pleased to announce the arrival of 「The Akkeshi Blended Whisky Daikan」a limited release from Kenten Co.Ltd, Akkeshi Distillery.
Daikan is the 24th of the 24 small seasons (the last of the 24 seasons) and is said to be the coldest time of the year. The lowest temperature of the year is often recorded at this time.
The packaging and label design was colourful for the previous ‘Ritto’, but has returned to a calm, cool and chic design for this one. The motif is based on the steam fog ‘ke-arashi’ in Akkeshi Bay. The design conveys the cold weather.
The key malt is ‘all Hokkaido Mizunara cask pure form’.
The grains used this time have changed distilleries from those used in the previous blended whiskies ‘Shosho’ and ‘Usui’.
This was chosen to add impact to the akkeshi malt, blended with a grain that further enhances the characteristics of the akkeshi malt.
The malt blend is mainly key malt (Mizunara casks), with bourbon casks used somewhat sparingly, and sherry and wine casks adding sweetness and flamboyance to the taste.
The finish is a solid harmony of low peat and Akkeshi malt sweetness.
